Making a Shield

A shield for use in dances and pageants can be easily made in a short time from old canvas or other heavy cloth and a barrel hoop. Cut the hoop down to half of its original thickness and smooth and sandpaper its rough edges. Then cut out a circular piece of canvas six inches greater in diameter than the hoop. Punch holes around the edges of the canvas, and with a piece of heavy cord lace it tightly over the hoop. Fig. 93 shows how the back of the shield should look when this work is finished.
